This post is ideal for those wanting to reduce their plastic consumption or reduce the amount of waste they leave when it comes to eating. Whether you’re often travelling, often get lunch or breakfast to go, or like me, always taking cutlery in your bag wrapped in kitchen paper to find it has fallen to the bottom of your bag with a bunch of crumbs and who knows what else, then this post may be for you!
With some travel plans coming up, I wanted to find some more eco and planet friendly tupperware and cutlery alternatives. When buying food out, or taking food with me, I did not want to use plastic cutlery that you throw away after one use. I wanted a cutlery, that was not made from plastic and made from a more eco-friendly material, set that I could keep in my bag easily and could take with me to work, to picnics, cycle rides or when travelling! After a bit of searching, I came across this beautiful cutlery set made from rice husk, by the brand Olpro. At £6 for a fork, knife, spoon and case, this was cheaper than other options I had come across. Olpro offers free UK delivery and also offer 10% on first orders too. So for £5.40, I am very happy with my purchase! Olpro also offer other husk products, which are definitely worth checking out.
What is husk?
- The shell rice comes in
Why use husk?
- Made from agricultural waste
- Does not contain any harmful substances
- BPA free
Some bonus features of this set include:
- Microwave safe (up to 3 minutes)
- Freezer safe
- 1.27 times harder than glass
- High density with no pores prevents bacteria- has antibacterial properties
- No formaldehyde or metallic substances
The set is really nice to use, it’s a lot thicker than I thought it would be and so I assume a lot more durable than I originally assumed. The fact that it comes in a case, means you can keep the cutlery clean in your bag and afterwards, you won’t get leftover food or crumbs in your bag.
It would be very hard to be completely plastic free and zero waste, but it’s the little changes we should all adapt! Let me know if there are any eco travel purchases that you recommend!
