Vegan in Southsea, Hampshire- Southsea Coffee Co.

Southsea Coffee Co Although I only had a less than a year living as a vegan in Portsmouth, it’s so great to so see the growing number of vegan-friendly places. A trip back in January to see some old school friends, meant lunch out. After checking the Happy Cow website, I asked my friends if we could go to Southsea Coffee Co, as the menu showed so many vegan options! I hadn’t been there in about 3.5 years, so the menu had really grown (I’m not even sure if they served hot food at the time) or if it was just cakes.

Although they are ultimately an independent speciality coffee house, the care and effort they have put into their menu is just amazing. They provide food to ‘nourish your soul AND your body,’ everything is made, baked and designed in store! With a menu which changes every 6-8 weeks, you can really tell that they have taken a great deal of care with providing delicious and carefully curated food. Although the vegan options aren’t marked on their website they do specify ‘from feel-good classics, to fully raw vegan dishes we like to think of our menu as inclusive for all.’ Looking at the descriptions, a lot seemed or sounded to be vegan. Upon going to the cafe and looking at the real paper menu, my guesses were correct. In fact, about 80% of the menu was plant-based/vegan!

Both my friend and I went for the jackfruit chilli, Mexican quinoa, cashew sour cream and cornbread.. and oh my! It was SO delicious! My friend, who is an omni absolutely loved it and I am sooo glad she chose one the vegan options! I also ordered a matcha oat latte which was so delicious! The portions aren’t huge, so there was definitely room for a cake.. they had about six different raw/vegan cakes and one vegan muffin. I went for the lemon cheesecake raw slice which was so light and refreshing and really complimented the main meal and hot drink.

I highly recommend this cafe. The decor is really lovely too- a great mix of wood, industrial and Scandi styling. Although there were lots of tables and seats, they were all full and we did end up sharing one of the large tables at the back with some other people. This obviously shows just how popular they are. I would really like to go back and try more from their menu. I hope it’s not another 3 and half years before I go back!
